Hello, I’m Gemma Lasseter, the garden designer and horticulturist behind Gardens by Gemma. I originally trained in Biomedical Science, majoring in plant pathology and microbiology, before moving into clinical microbiology and public health. Early in my academic studies, I undertook a placement at Long Ashton Research Station, a respected centre for plant science, before going on to work in the NHS, Health Protection Agency, and University of Bristol. I managed various health and wellbeing research projects, experiences that reinforced my understanding of how deeply human health is connected to the natural world.
Building on my scientific background and a lifetime of hands-on gardening experience, I retrained in Garden Design at the Garden Design School, based at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden, graduating with distinction. I also studied Horticulture (RHS Level 2) to strengthen my practical expertise.
I’m a Registered Gardener with the Professional Gardeners’ Guild, a Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture, and Cluster Lead for the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers’ Bristol & Bath group. This blend of scientific training, horticultural knowledge and creative design enables me to create beautiful and functional gardens that are resilient and wildlife-friendly.
I’ve been gardening for as long as I can remember and even started designing gardens when I was just five years old. Today, through Gardens by Gemma, I design, plant and maintain wildlife-friendly gardens across Bristol, Bath and North Somerset. My work focuses on organic principles, resilient planting and eco-conscious techniques that encourage biodiversity and provide year-round interest. For me, a successful garden is one that feels alive, a space where people, plants and wildlife can flourish together.
My Approach
Supporting local wildlife is at the heart of my work. I take time to understand what’s working in your garden and to discuss how the space could work better for you, so any changes support both your needs and the health of the garden.
Each project is unique, from full redesigns to regular maintenance, and I will work closely with you to create a cohesive, functional space that is also a haven of natural beauty.
Collaboration is Key
Collaboration and communication are at the core of my work. I have developed excellent relationships with horticultural nurseries, landscape contractors and suppliers to ensure attention to detail at every stage, allowing your garden to be delivered and maintained to the highest possible standard.
Where I Work
I work predominantly in Bristol & Bath, North Somerset, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and South Wales.
I am open to working elsewhere throughout the United Kingdom and on special projects internationally.
